How To Listen To Your Entire Music Collection Anywhere You Are

So you have downloaded a ton of music from Itunes or some other means. Maybe you just have a ton of CDS. Sure you can put some of your songs on your Ipod and listen to them on the go. But how would you like to be able to listen to your entire music library from any internet enabled device? (Ipod, Iphone, Computer etc..)
If this sounds like something you would be interested in heres how you do it. If the setup of this sounds a bit overwhelming for you and this is something you would want just contact me and I can set it up for you. For an idea of what it will look like when you are streaming Music on your device see here for a demo: http://subsonic.org/demo/login.view?user=guest5&password=guest

First thing you need to do is download a program called Subsonic. The main website is here: http://www.subsonic.org/ if you want to read all about it. You can download the program directly here: http://www.subsonic.org/pages/download2.jsp?target=subsonic-4.4-setup.exe
After you download it just simply download click on subsonic-4.4-setup.exe and run it just keep clicking "next" on the installer to install the program.

After you do this you should get a little green icon down by your clock. Now you need to setup Subsonic to detect the music on your computer so it can stream it over the internet. For instructions on how to do this see here: http://www.subsonic.org/pages/getting-started.jsp

Finish setting up by following this directions: http://www.subsonic.org/pages/getting-started.jsp#2

I highly recommend setting up your own personal subsonic address as mentioned here: http://www.subsonic.org/pages/getting-started.jsp#2.3 this will make it alot easier to access your music.

After you have set this up. You can go to another computer or iphone etc that has internet and type in your subsonic address that you created and you will be presented with a login screen. Login with the username and password you created and bingo! you can listen to all your music from anywhere anytime.

Also if you have a ton of Cds that you would like to save to your computer so you can listen to them over subsonic. Heres how:

I recommend the average user get Audio Grabber from here: http://www.audiograbber.org/download.html
recommend installing the MP3 plugin as well but its not required.
For help on using Audio Grabber see here (Its super easy): http://www.audiograbber.org/maintour.html

Just save your music to the folder that you have Subsonic pointed to and your set.

For more advanced users I recommend Exact Audio Copy. You will not find a better Cd ripper out there. Tons of features but not recommended for the average user. You can get Exact Audio Copy here: http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

If anyone has any questions or suggestions just let me know.

What Are Rogue/Fake Antivirus Applications?

I have found that rogue/fake anti virus programs are one of the most common infections that I find today on clients computers. Many of you maybe infected with one and not even be aware. You may ask what is a rogue anti virus? Basically it is a virus that pretends to be a program that is detecting viruses on your computer. Of course there may not really be any viruses at all. Then it may even ask you to enter a credit card number to purchase there product to remove that "viruses" that have been detected. When in reality when you enter your card number nothing will change and your computer may even become more infected with the fake anti virus. On top of that your credit card number has now been stolen. Below I have created a list of fake Anti virus programs. If you have any of these on your computer contact me as soon as you can your computer has been infected.

Here is an example of a rogue/fake antivirus. The screens you see will be very convincing and deceiving. In reality is all a scam and a virus

Here is the list of rogue anti virus programs contact me if you have any of these on your computer:

Free Alternative To Microsoft Office

Im sure most of you are familiar with the Microsoft Office Suite. You know Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access. Im sure most of you know that it cost over $100. Well there is an alternative and best of all its totally free! It is called Open Office. I have been using it for years and honestly I have yet to run into a problem with it. I can do anything with it that I would want to do with big $100 product. You can download Open Office here: http://www.openoffice.org/ if you would like to give it a try. I highly recommend it and I install it on many of my clients computers upon there request.

IMPORTANT: Make sure that you change Open Office so it saves in the Microsoft Office format. Otherwise if you email a file to someone or try to open it at school in Word or Excel it will not open. Just follow the instructions in this video and your set.

Also I recommend unchecking the box that says "Warn When Not Saving In ODF or default format." If anyone needs help setting up Open Office just let me know.

Be looking for more Free software I will be highlighting in coming posts.

File Your Taxes Online For Free

If you feel confident enough to do your own taxes or if you use the short form when you file your taxes this is for you. I have done this the past 2 years when I filed my taxes and it is super easy. You can file your Federal Taxes right on the IRS website at: http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html

For filing your state taxes you can use one of these if you live in Kentucky: http://revenue.ky.gov/FFAOffers.htm You can also use it to file your federal and its usually around $9.00 But you should be able to file just your KY State Taxes through one of them and then file your Federal through the IRS website link.

If your in Ohio go here: http://tax.ohio.gov/divisions/communications/electronic_filing_options.stm for free filing options.

Protecting Your Facebook Password While On Public Wifi Hotspots

Have you ever used wireless internet at a hotel? at an airport or even the library? Public wireless hotspots are very easy and convenient to use. No password needed you simply connect to the network and your online. You can get on your Facebook, email, check your bank account etc. The problem is with the convenience of a open wireless hotspot comes a consequence.  Have you ever stopped to think could someone steal my usernames and passwords for sites I am logging into on public wifi? The answer to this question is yes they can but it can be prevented. For example if you log into your facebook or twitter someone can steal your password very easily using a program called firesheep. Firesheep makes it so easy that a 10 year old kid could steal your password on a public wifi network. I was going to create a video explaining this and how to defend against it. I have found someone else has already created an excellent video explaining this already. Have a watch and you will have a better understanding.

To download the extension for firefox mention in the video Https Everywhere visit:  https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere

If you do not use firefox and use Internet Explorer (Which I do not recommend) I recommend using Hot Spot Shield when you are on a public wifi network. You can get it here:  http://hotspotshield.com/

The basic principle to know is if a website  starts with http:// then your password CAN be stolen on a public network. If it starts with https:// your password CAN NOT be stolen.

Examples:

http://www.facebook.com Your password can be stolen

https://www.facebook.com Your password can not be stolen
